Fun weather at the momment - forecast sumarised it as "showers", but what it actually is, is bands of heavy rain for about 2-5 min, followed by sun for a while, followed by cloud, followed by some more brief heavy rain with strong wind gusts throughout. 3 am thunderstorm last night, though fairly quiet one which Z slept through. Apparently wind gusts in the morning reached up to 100km/h (shock horror, quiet from those in Wellington giggling slightly) and there has been some minor damage.

It is actually (relatively) cold and nasty out - though still in double figures.

So, of course I needed to duck out to the shops for bread and eggs. 5 min walk max, so no worries. Picked a good gap for heading over - there was sun, but it quickly disappeared as the nice grey clouds rolled in from the ~NW. Got to the shops fine and wandered around the supermarket and listened to the nice loud rain on the roof. Got everything and headed to the back door. Still raining, though it appeared to be easing and you could see cloud detail in the right directions. Safe to depart. Nope - big fat raindrops, well spaced so you could see cloud easily between them but still packing plenty of wet. Still not as bad as the downpour a few minutes ago from the menacing dark grey cloud now behind. It picked up slightly once I got under the veranda, then stopped and the sun came out briefly.

Damp now and need to defrost my fingers.

Fun though :)

Soggy...

35.8mm since 9am yesterday from the local weather station. Definite rain round 7am - 6mm in half an hour from the website. Rest appeared to just be steady rain of about a mm per hour for most of the day.
Z back from the field due to gravel (and dirt) roads being too dangerous to drive on in the wet. No good being in the field if you can't reach your field area safely. Not to mention the fact that driving over the dirt tracks in the wet buggers them completely and farmers get miffed and charge lots for replacement.

Wonder if the rain has gone for the morning yet? Walking to the library was on the cards, but given it doesn't open til 10am, not exactly in a hurry.

It is Thursday and all wet out. In NZ this wouldn't be suprising, but over here there is still a great deal of novelty in rain which has actually carried on continuously, only varying in density since about 5:30am*. I may grab an umbrella or rain coat when heading out for dinner and DVD hunting.

Maybe Z is a rain god - his field area hadn't seen rain in at least 15 year prior to him turning up and it looks like rain twice in the time he has been there. Good for the farmers from a "lets farm the land" point of view (though it could just be seen as raising false hopes), but bad from the "roads just wash away if you sprinkle water on them, let alone have sustained rainfall" point of view. Soggy lizards.

Looks like my parents should be entering the 21st century shortly**. Skype looks like a go, dunno about Firefox...

*Yes, unfortunately I do know it started round 5:30am as Z had to get up at that point to head into work and into the field. This combined wonderfully with a warm night of not sleeping well. Sensible sleeping patterns HA!

** Yes, my parents are fairly computer literate - they have been using computers as research tools since they were at Uni. And will use the WWW happily - found [livejournal.com profile] slothphil's photo pages years ago and may or may not check LJ... Just previously hampered by home dialup. Still trying to convert them away from heavy Microsloth reliance though.

Of the last DVD collection (now about to be returned), Mrs Henderson Presents was the best. Well done with good dialogue and Judi Dench was perfect. Next Walking with Beasts (may need to get out again to watch the extra docos as I only really vaguely listened), Buffy (rest of season 1) and a dim and distant last, Phantom of the Opera (more a sort of giggle/snarf/listen to the music thing).
Previous round: Sense and Sensibility good as ever, Bright Young Things was fun (Steven Fry directing for the first time), King Arthur very silly, end Season 1 West Wing (bloody cliffhangers and the rental place doesn't have the next season) and the start of Season 1 Buffy (good enough to pique my curiousity).
2 1/2 seams down on the hood, 2 1/2 and the hem to go. Oily fingers place a limit of about one movie at a time on that.
Time to brave the heat (35 degrees C out), select the next round of DVDs and pick up bread and something nice and cold for dinner.

Ok....

So, apparently this (just) past February has been the hottest February for the past 100 years in Adelaide.
Oh joy. Just as well we skipped out on a week and a half of it.
But we are getting used to it. Such that complaints about Chch getting up to 30 degrees and being far too hot are greated with delight that it has finally gotten down to around 30 degrees round here. 34 tomorrow and 37 degrees on Fri before she settles in around 28 degress for the rest of the following week.
Glad we went for the air conditioning and room with a ceiling fan though. Sleep and hands not too sweaty to sew with are good.

Don't you hate it when you start something one way, get part way through and realise you should have done things a different way but you are too far along and too stubborn to switch.

One hood is just about done to a wearable standard. Don't think my fingers will stand doing another with the hand finished edges, so either Z's one done tonight will have visable machine stitching, or he is finishing it himself, or he wont have one - in which case we will get downpours and everyone else (except me) will be soggy.*

The evening scent of soggy wool Viking...

But he does have a broad brim hat... and the cloak is done...

I will note that we have both done events with wool cloaks and hoods in the rain and been fine**. It is just that dry cloaks on the bed are much nicer to sleep under.

*Cause Murphy's law says so.
**NAAMA 2002 anyone?

But I think I will be happy with any NZ weather given the weather we are skipping out on - 34 degrees Thurs, building to 38 degrees Mon and Tues.

Edit: 2nd hood now has the machined bits done and just needs threads sewn in for it to be useable. Time to pack and faint at the weights involved...

Carl Sagan

As some of you may know from postings on Cocktail Party Physics etc, it is approximately the 10 year anniversary of the death of Carl Sagan - on of the more famous popular astronomers around. There are some good links given on that site, so I wont repeat them here.
Instead I will just reccommend that you get hold of a copy of his book "The Demon Haunted World" and read it. Even if you just manage a couple of the essays - but that isn't difficult cause he writes very well.

And for those of you putting up with miserable rain and wind and cold down south, I wont complain about it being 34+ degrees out. But from the radar we should get some lovely rain in the next few hours. Looking at the weather forecasts for Christmas, we get cooler and you get warmer so everybody wins..

28 degrees out by 8am.
34.6 degrees out by 10:30am.
[Edit: 39.5 degrees out by 3pm.]
[Edit3: 36 degrees 8pm. And it cracked 40 at 2:30pm and wobbled round there for a while before slowly starting to cool after 6pm. Really need a local thermometer to check out differences/variations in the local microclimate.]
Predicted high for today is 38 degrees.

I think I will be making use of the air-conditioning when it gets above 35 degrees. The house is well insulated, so it takes a while for the heat to soak in, but you can feel it building.

[Edit2: And tomorrows prediction is for 41 degrees, with 28 overnight.]

Blink blink
Rental application faxed off early on Tues morning.
Place offered to us before lunch time that day.
Paperwork signed and money changed hands this morning.
I get to collect keys etc on Fri while Z plays "dig here" locally.
We have possession of the place as of Sat...
Which is just as well, as Z gets to play "dig here" in more northern wastelands as of Mon for 2 weeks.

So, I think this weekend may be a little busy.

And in other news, made it to a local dance practice for the first time in a while. Was good, though I think my reprizza (?sp) muscles have atrophied. Would go for a wander outside to stretch them a bit, but it's nearly 34 degrees out and there are pieces of tree blowing past at high velocity (ok, about 30 km/h which would be ok appart from the drop tree effect). Discussions of fudge recipes haven't helped but the outside temperature is a definite disincentive. It doesn't help that it just looks like an overcast windy day out. No clues to the air temperature outside until you turn the cold tap and warm water comes out.
And this is spring...

So, before getting in a car with a near stranger, it seemed a good idea to sit in a stationary vehicle and remember which was the brake, accelerator and clutch and how to start the sucker. Didn't go anywhere - we have a steep driveway that would need to be reversed out and the back windscreen was frozen - visability when driving is your friend. But started the car, listened to noises wrt clutch engagement, turned her off and played with the gears a little. Then went inside cause it was COLD*.
But I think I remember the basics from when I last trundled over Festival site (March...)

Would have been a longer practice but Z has homework from his first aid course and is currently reviewing his first aid kid. They get to play hide the corpses rescue people out near the airport tommorrow.

Time to get some work done on the shirt. Side and hem to go.

*It was -4 degrees in town and -6 at our end this morning. Forecast is for -5 tonight, so may be -7 here... Yay wool coif and flockarti rug. Boo to actually having to get up.
stellar_muddle: (Default)
Having had 15 min soaking in sunlight for lunch*, now have until 2pm (15 min) to play

Swedish doublet and shirt references... who, me, consistant time period? )

Time up, back to models. The HV 11303 observations appear to have shocks in very aukward places making the models really not behave/converge. Just as well I know the 15K temperatures indicate calculation errors rather than actual stellar interior conditions.

* It is gloriously warm in the sunshine at the momment and definitely more pleasant than my office. Unfortunately the ethernet cable wont stretch out to the steps and the laptop refuses to run the models anyway. And the peach crumble leftovers were nice...

Just as well the extra cloak I was finishing was left on the bed: it was only 12 degrees over night. She is forecast to go below 10 degrees at night for the next 7 days. Definitely need to make more cloaks/dig out more of the old ones. There are advantages to having a large woollen cloak collection. I am also looking forward to the fact that we will have the cloaks, flockarti rug, psuedo fur rug and woolen caps/hats for sleeping in/on at Festival.

And on the Festival progress front:
Tent 1 has the door/wall seams done and the base of the doors hemmed. Only door ties, trimming and side edge to go, but that does need a flat area and an extra person to put up and measure/mark. Also rope along base for pegging down walls.
Tent 2 has 3/10 eyelets done, but only needs 3 more and the guy ropes attached before it is put-up-able for the door positioning etc. Then it is waterproofing, doors to walls on the base and the same sequence as Tent 1.
Yellow linen tunic neckline repaired and wearable. Eowyn sideless surcoat de-looped so now more period. That was the only repairs I had, but Z tends to beat up his clothing more...
2nd cushion now finished, which means one for sleeping on and a spare for hitting people with. The embroidered one started in a fit of procrastination/curiousity at work can be ongoing.
2 green wool cloaks done - one for [livejournal.com profile] alpha_angel to use and any more finished will be retailed. I don't think I can make it through the full ~40+m left - Z has already sold the rest.
I wont start on the list of smaller things that are started and need finishing or need starting... satchel, hose, cloaks ...
That and pursuading the occasional workmate or two that they want to come out to the Festival Market day, so helping them with clothing etc...

Plenty to do.

Edit: And managed a 4 strand plait in hair. Bit messy and it definitely wont work in dutch or french mode, but still works. Would try 5 strand which should work dutch or french, but I don't think I have enough fingers...:)

It is hot here - 35 degrees (though not the 36 degrees forecast)... We weakened and bought an electric fan. This is a good thing and being ensconced on the sofa reading while having air blown past you is definitely worth it. Now all we need is the slave girls, peeled grapes and buckets of sorbet...
1/2 hour driving practice today - bit hot by 10 am and we wanted to visit the markets. No luck there though:(

Curiously enough of the listed plans for Sat, CC did supply a food processor but no speakers, music voucher wasn't used due to crap selection, K-mart has nasty expensive sheets (corrected at YMCA shop today for 3 sheets for half the price of one - only need something to throw over in the hot nights). Managed the home and blobbing though... and the picnic.

Casuarina Sands last night was good. Only waded in the water since the air temperature had cooled from a couple thunderstorms and mozzies were starting to emerge, but the water temperature was great and the river bottom nice and sandy. Trifle disturbing to have people swimming and people fishing at the same spot though.

Need to work out what to do: acquired an amp and speaker set, but the speakers are blown (yes, daft us for not checking first - it was cheap). Speakers are 40W, 6 ohm impedance. Now for replacement speakers (the amp seems fine), we realise we can use ones of up to that power max, but what about the impedance? Does that need to match exactly, or can we go a bit below (say 8 ohms - based on info from All About Impedance) and still be ok and not fry the circuits?

Doco lineup on SBS tonight looks interesting - on Lost Worlds, 1st of a three part series on famous mistresses - mother of Cesare and Lucretia Borgia tonight. After that, a doco called Science: Dr Tatiana's Sex Advice To All Creation - a guide to the evolutionary biology of sex... Pity it is starting to reach the hotter inside than out stage of the proceedings...
