Yay to the LJ feed of Loose Threads: Yet Another Costuming Blog by Cathy Raymond who posts cool stuff about Viking clothing amongst other things. I had been following sporadically when I remembered, and I know several people reading follow her already, but yay for feeds...

Amongst the cool stuff she has linked to:
Shelagh Lewin's Reconstructed Viking Woman's Outfit based on the Kostrup find (apologies to the scandanavians whimpering over the lack of proper lettering there...).
Hilde Thunem's Viking women: Underdress
Hilde Thunem's Viking women: Aprondress (in progress). Yay to archeological focuses in both of these.

Enough viking clothing links for now...

Colour zoomable images of textiles from the Mammen Grave. You can zoom right in on the tablet weaving...
If you head up a level or two there is a large Viking section with silver hoards and all.
National Museum in Copenhagen, so have plenty of cool stuff which I have only scratched the surface. Yay bog bodies and graves :)

Eldrimner Viking era food blog by an archeology PhD student specialising in the subject. So far appears to cover beer, food smoking and various grinding amongst other things. And one of the entires has links to other people doing the same sort of thing.

Apparently he is basically doing a summer of experimental archeology cooking at Lofotr Viking Museum.

Aardvarchaeology has just released a (75pg!!:) )paper on Domed oblong brooches of Vendel Period Scandinavia (pdf linked off his blog post). Large amounts of detail and very cool image.

Read! You know you want to :)

Viking hoard found in Harrowgate
Edit: BBC article here and more photos here.

Museum toured. Very nice rocks. Meteorite fragments patted. Ediacaran fauna fossils drooled over.

And I have just distracted Z with this. Ok, so it is 12th century iron smelting in a blast furnace, but still sounds very cool. Apparently they are about to start their 7th (?) smelt. Nothing like random trawling of friends of friends lists to find interesting stuff...

Those who get the SCANews feed will already have it, but for those interested in Viking stuff, Blackwell Publishing is offering Acta Archaeologica 2000 v71 as their free sample issue at present. The issue specializes in Viking stuff and has some quite cool stuff, with each article downloadable as a PDF. Not certain how long it will stay free for.

And yes, [livejournal.com profile] basal_surge, I did download them all. Look when you get home:)

And vaguely attempt to organise myself...

We have a kilo of shrapnell from previous NZ trips - remind me which coins are have changed and which are still legal. I did link to it in LJ when it first came out but didn't tag it (bad me). Also, is it a particular bank or any bank for changing the buggers?

Is there anything (drinkies/party-like) scheduled for Tues - Fri (6-9 Feb)? - We fly out early Sat morning on the 10th...

Started (well, continued really) making lists. This one was the to-do list when we get over.
I think the Weds/Thurs are going to be fairly busy...

Thinking of quickly whipping up a hood and half circle oilskin cloak each this weekend (yay to borrowing a very nice industrial sewing machine). Debating over whether to inset neck hole and I will be evil and not include a lirapipe in the hoods (despite the large body of evidence that I should for hood shape for at least 12th C onwards).

Still having ongoing debate with Z over documentation for half circle cloaks in Viking era - he says yes, I say dodgy.
Evidence/sources/arguements/rants )

So, what would you say? Or would you just duck for cover and step away quietly...

Was supposed to be working on the swag...

Very nice pdf (1.8Mb) of someone's presentation on Norse accessories. Got some gorgeous closeups of various things including combs and shoes.

I need a better way of keeping track of which articles I have and where they were from, that can cope with websites as well as journal articles. You end up with 3 separate entities: the paper collection - hardcopy so it ain't going to vanish in a puff of electrons but it can be borrowed and/or lost and wieght is a bit of a bastard (especially when moving), pdf/documents on the computer - less weight but you need to remember where you put them, what they were and where you got them in the first place so you can direct others there, and websites - grand and gloreous bookmark collections of stuff that may or may not still be there when you go back to it.

Can you tell I am stuck waiting at home for a freight company that may or may not deliver today and may or may not phone beforehand (hopefully they got my phone number as well as Z's since he is out rock hopping til tomorrow evening and not in cell phone range)? Have already assembled/bookmarked a partial list of Salvos stores, op shops, some second hand furnature places and second hand timber salvage yards for the weekend. Need some stuff from the shops but will wait til early evening when freight people are unlikely to turn up. At least have enough stuff for lunch and dinner. Doesn't help that the phone needs charging and I don't want to go far from it.

Oh, and I am getting really pissed off at search engines which pigeonhole and list based on their criteria, rather than what I put in. You would think that "bookcase" and "table" would be nice straightforward things to search on...

Gosh this is whingy sounding, given it really isn't that bad. Time for a break, LUNCH and starting apples and apricots drying, then nice patch of shade either in front or back yard with bean bag and the last half of a good book.

Food, markets - general grocery shopping, then driving practice.
Time to stop surfing...

Z, getting your library card asap would be a really good idea..., especially with the last one.

So, having gotten 30-45cm by ~1.8m of nice even weave (linen?) embroidery fabric for 80c, I want to make cushions out of it. Specifically bolster style cushions which can double as pillows on the Viking bed. Long rectangular ones, that can also sit on the chests etc.
So far, so good. Next step, picking a design.
