About sound drivers.
EDIT: Now no longer needed as found the right driver off the official website (thank you [livejournal.com profile] theuns) and am now listening to an Elgar Cello Concerto a Faure Pavane.

Putting this behind a cut now, cause all fixed :) Yay!!! )

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] talkingfrog for the free linux box (from Tues evening) which now means that I still have a functioning computer box which will actually talk to the net. Which given I don't get a hardrive spinning up noise from the laptop and it just produces blank black screen of death, is really really well timed... Yay to internet communication. Haven't tried to see if this flavour of Ubuntu will talk to any of the hard drives yet though. Will save that fun for later.

Is very grey and windy out. Should get back to the kitchen cleaning I was procrastinating by setting up computers.

Oh, so what firewall, virus stopping software do I need for Ubuntu - don't really wish to leave this machine naked to the internet for long...

Edit: and if anyone knows what "error: dependency is not satisfiable: libqt4-core" when attempting to install Skype is. Should have been the Ubuntu Skype version...

Wouldn't normally do this from work, but home laptop has decided to go fut! For some random reason it rebooted itselft last night (I overheard it while watching TV, but didn't check at the time) and now upon booting up it goes through a different sequence to usual and eventually decides it can't find any operating system. There should normally be Windows XP there.
Not a good start.
Luckily, any documents etc were back up about a week ago and only websurfing done since (and I still have the CDs for any music copied on), so shouldn't have lost anything in that respect (hence the resigned sigh, rather than manic gibbering in a corner), but still annoying.

Need to find out what to do now. Will do what I can to fix things before Z gets back on Sun, but suspect I may not be able to do much (though I think we have a boot disk round somewhere to see if theat helps to check state of things - no idea how to use it though). Not a fun thing to come back to for your week off.

So, probably little or no internet over the weekend then...

Edit: So from brief googling, either the instructions for finding the laptop harddrive (I assume the bit with the operating system on) are fragged, or the hard drive is fragged. Since this is a laptop, certain options (unplugging and replugging in the hard drive) are out. No idea which is the case, though I assume that one turns the laptop into a paperweight and the other is a little more workable around... No idea if we still have the Windows installation disc...

It is Thursday and all wet out. In NZ this wouldn't be suprising, but over here there is still a great deal of novelty in rain which has actually carried on continuously, only varying in density since about 5:30am*. I may grab an umbrella or rain coat when heading out for dinner and DVD hunting.

Maybe Z is a rain god - his field area hadn't seen rain in at least 15 year prior to him turning up and it looks like rain twice in the time he has been there. Good for the farmers from a "lets farm the land" point of view (though it could just be seen as raising false hopes), but bad from the "roads just wash away if you sprinkle water on them, let alone have sustained rainfall" point of view. Soggy lizards.

Looks like my parents should be entering the 21st century shortly**. Skype looks like a go, dunno about Firefox...

*Yes, unfortunately I do know it started round 5:30am as Z had to get up at that point to head into work and into the field. This combined wonderfully with a warm night of not sleeping well. Sensible sleeping patterns HA!

** Yes, my parents are fairly computer literate - they have been using computers as research tools since they were at Uni. And will use the WWW happily - found [livejournal.com profile] slothphil's photo pages years ago and may or may not check LJ... Just previously hampered by home dialup. Still trying to convert them away from heavy Microsloth reliance though.
