Oct. 4th, 2008 01:03 pmThank you to
talkingfrog for the free linux box (from Tues evening) which now means that I still have a functioning computer box which will actually talk to the net. Which given I don't get a hardrive spinning up noise from the laptop and it just produces blank black screen of death, is really really well timed... Yay to internet communication. Haven't tried to see if this flavour of Ubuntu will talk to any of the hard drives yet though. Will save that fun for later.
Is very grey and windy out. Should get back to the kitchen cleaning I was procrastinating by setting up computers.
Oh, so what firewall, virus stopping software do I need for Ubuntu - don't really wish to leave this machine naked to the internet for long...
Edit: and if anyone knows what "error: dependency is not satisfiable: libqt4-core" when attempting to install Skype is. Should have been the Ubuntu Skype version...

Date: 2008-10-04 05:29 am (UTC)Dependencies work like this: every piece of software uses other packages here and there; for example, Firefox might use a JPEG-drawing package to draw piccies on the screen. You need them to be installed. If you install everything via the package manager, which is called either Synaptic or else Aptitude, then you don't need to worry about what uses what. But if you're installing something from a third party, you need to open the package manager, type the name into the search there, and install it. Then try again; rinse, repeat.
