Sigh...

Sulk sulk sulk sulk sulk...

So, added as much wire as I thought necessary to the viking trichnopoly chain I was making for Z. Couldn't find the draw plate so Z made a new one. Tried tucking the wire ends in, but ended up cutting them off close to the main chain. And then drew it (well Z did).

Bugger.
Evened out nicely. Looked good, but you can still feel the little sharp sprag ends when running your fingers down opposite to the pulling direction. And it is plastic coated silver coloured wire, making it entertaining to solder ends onto anyway.

And still too short. Fits around my neck nicely, but definitely not around Z's. Which given it was started as a birthday present for Z last year...

Hmph.

But we have swept and mopped wooden floors. I have a new chest (well, Z redid the ends and now it is chest version 3 out of that wood), which wool and various projects have been transfered into. Ironically the most viking looking chest has the blackwork and doublet projects in... And you can see a great deal more lounge floor.

And Z has just made a nice large batch of sympathy popcorn which smells great but due to sore gums* I possibly shouldn't eat. Given the new mouthwash also appears to have nuked my tongue and mouth from orbit - feels burnt, which it really shouldn't...

Screw it, LKH vampire popcorn, real popcorn and a good beanbag time I think.

*Crooked wisdom tooth interaction and rubbing? Ouchie in any case

Still waiting...

Note for later: "Trichnopoly" doesn't get you very far for googling*, however "Viking wire knitting" is far more productive.

All sorts of instructions here, here, here and here. The last one has some nice extant pictures, nice instructions but occasionally dodgy logic reconstruction-wise ie the assumption that the Valsgaard 12 fragment is a cuff, rather than actually the decorated end of a stole (ok, recentish development (2003/2004?) and not made it far into the popular literature/references), like the Mammen one (I'd find a picture but my googling fu is used up for today). More importantly, I wish people would attribute and label their artifact pictures. Yes, it is off the World of the Vikings CD (which I wouldn't mind getting my hands on for the artifact pictures - expensive little sucker), but exactly where and what (caption please) would be a great step. I can ID that one picture at 10 feet but only cause someone was actually nice enough to caption properly so I could learn. Context context context. That way, when ideas about what it is and its purpose change, you can keep track of things.

And while I am at it, any one know of pictures of the back side of that fragment - would like to know if it is a standard tube of wire stitched on or what. Yes, I know, how evil wanting to see the backside or underneath or inside.

*Didn't try (mis?)spelling variations.

Yes, I'm cranky... Can you tell?

Still not back yet...

So, neck getting sore so stopped insanely detailed sewing. Switched to Viking trichnopoly ie looped wire work. Now I have blisters on my thumb...
Follow the pretty LJ-cut to see pictures (5) of what trichnopoly looks like )
Next time, through second loop back rather than first for denser weave. Also finer mandrill so less space between loops. Also start wearing gloves sooner. But I think I'll let the fingers recover first.

One of thse mediocre days with lots of little things to piss you off but a number of redeaming features.

1) Booked flights back to NZ for trip - whoosh goes money... But trip will be good.
2) Learned how to do Viking trichnopoly (wire woven into a cord/chain) at AAF craft night. Makes sense and fingers crossed, I should be able to replicate/improve on my efforts. Took a number of tries though. Vices, mandrills, wire cutters and wire should all be available around the place somewhere. Then need to make draw plate.
3) Blackwork on collar is progressing nicely. I have given myself until the end of the week to get it done, that way I wont get bored, bugger off for something else shiny (eg wire work) and never finish it. May even post piccies...
4) Last but not least, found a supermarket here which stocks a range of the Whittacars chocolate. This may be fatal at $5 per block, but seeing the dark chocolate and ginger one... mmmmm.... I'll stash it somewhere safe for special occasions.
