The New Years break holiday summary
Jan. 7th, 2008 12:05 pmThe things we post while a cat is draped over our lap. There is an ongoing discussion whereby he pins down my arms with paws and I tolerate it for a while before reminding him of "no claws" and rearrange things. Need food/lunch soon, but he is all comfy and sleepy...
Previous brief summary is here.
Thurs 27 Dec: Into Chch and caught up with people at A's birthday potluck. Much food and talking.
Fri 28 Dec: Some shopping. Comparisons of a selection of shoe/disposal/hiking shops and ended up with 3 boots between us, 1 sleeping bag and a sleeping mat. Dropped by Piko's and N's on the way out of town. Headed off north. Second hand shop in Greta Valley (grinding stone and book on NZ geology for Potters), dinner picked up in Kaikoura (BIG fish - two each was way overkill, and that should be our grease quota for the month) and eaten a bit further down the coast. Then made it to Blenheim and crashed with
margaretta, her brother, and his wife.
Sat 29 Dec: Omaka Aviation Heritage center. WWI planes and militaria focussing on flying aces, for 3 hours. Z was very happy and I was actually entertained for the full time. Definitely worth seeing if you are into that sort of thing, and anyone accompanying you should be reasonably distracted while you drool. Then lunch (Z hadn't noticed how late things were getting) at a not quite Japanese garden, some wandering around something similar to Ferrymeade, napping and general blobbing til dinner. After dinner, dropped in on Z' uncle and there was much exchanging of family stories.
Sun 30 Dec: Farmer's market and some cherries (mmm $7 per kg may be as good as it gets this season - great cherries though and wish we had gotten more). The plum park was better - settler's garden packed full of plum and walnut trees that had been turned into a park. You are free to pick as many plums as you like as long as you don't damage the trees and don't use them for commercial purposes. Then another brief visit to the uncle, before heading off back down south. Salt works views, family history tours, lots of seal watching, rock scrambling round the end of Kaikoura peninsula, a detour down a valley to a deserted gravel beach (nice contrast to the numbers round Kaikoura), mediocre to bad hamburgers in Cheviot, then onwards to Z's parents place via Chch outskirts cause it seemed like the easiest place to crash. Long day.
Mon 31 Dec: Eventually heading back into Chch, with a slight pause for industrial sewing machine inspection and negotiation and much tea consumption. Dropped by New Years party venue, visited people, grabbed pizza (mmm Spags mediteranian lamb) and setled in for the New Years party. Much music, conversation and dancing, with a brief lull of fireworks after midnight. I wilted round 3am and taxied back with B, M, and S, while Z wandered back after 4am.
Tues 1 Jan: Much sleeping in and blobbing. Beach lull for sandblasting, then BBQ and visiting people, before heading back to pack etc for 6:45am flight.
Weds 2 Jan: Up 5am for 6:45am flight. Whee. Flight then bus. Evil aircon/heating. Crash for the rest of the day. And that is where I think I started posting again.
Want another sewing project. Blackwork chemise is progressing fine, and I am not actually ready to throw it at any local walls. But I would like a sewing project which is train safe (read not blackwork) as from Weds onwards, there will be 2*45min train trips each weekday. I have on hand white linen, blue linen and scary trouser wool, as well as 5m of a light weight dark blue wool (unwashed).
That was brought while thinking about doing a better version (ie wool and correct cut) of 16th C Flemish (after various discussion and seeing these posts from Kass McGann (the Nehterlandish working woman ones towards the end)). But would need a proper chemise to go with that, and with a little tweaking (cut out some fabric and don't go for the massive gathering), the blackworked one should be able to work once finished. But that wont be for a while, and I don't really wish to start the outer layers until the underneath is right. Besides, the green wool for the basic underdress is still in storage*, along with the body blocks for patterning, so not something to be started in the next day or two.
After NAAMA and before Nov camp, there were vague plans for some male Viking/AS garb for me and a linen woman's undertunic with shorter sleeves (better for camping, especially dish washing). It may be worth picking those ideas up and running with them. But I do have enough (early period) clothing to do a 5 day camping event warmly and comfortably, so there isn't exactly a mad rush to get things done by any particular date/event. And Z is up to date in trousers and tunics currently.
Maybe the undertunic, as that will allow replacement of the cotton one made in 2001 (gotten much better at underarm gussets since them)...
*Along with most of the other fabric for all the other potential distracting projects - 15th C Italian, Edwardian riding jacket, 14th C cotehardie, circle skirt...
