Drooled over
The Tudor Tailor last night, amongst other things. Nice book, think I want a copy, though mainly for the first couple chapters on extant garments, images and the fabrics and construction used.
Did establish a curious dichotomy though. I like black work, I like sewing blackwork. But the style of blackwork I like doing (yes it does change style depending on time and place), is the earlier geometric bands worked in a counted (or at least evenly spaced) form. Not too fussed on the freeform plants and animals that you see in the later Elizabethan stuff, though have drooled over the occasional embroidered shirt. But I am not so fussed on the earlier outer layers, but prefer some of the later doublets and was eyeing up the black fitted gown in the book. So I look at a minature like that of
Jane Small by Holbein and would quite like to do the whiteworked head cloth (just visable) and the cuffs and collar of her shirt/chemise, but really couldn't care less about the rest of the layers and think the sleeves would be a pain in the arse. Not certain what to do about that at present, but will think about for a while.
Also want to spend a little time researching Victorian/Edwardian woman's riding jackets, but that is something else entirely.
Today was spent at the Manukau Medieval Market in Levin. Sort of like a very large collection of the sidestalls at an A&P show, only with a nominal medieval flavour. Some scarily bad music (even Z could tell they were way out off key), some nice mead liqueurs (mmmmmm ginger honey mead liqueur and the Drambuie like stuff) and boysenberry wine, and some very nice Afghani jewellery - much beadage purchased of carnelian, lapis and flourite (?). Not too polished too, so good for Viking stuff.
After that was loitering and watching something involving a catbus (kinda cool) and The Tick at S&Ts. In theory tonight is an early night, but looking at the clock, have failed to achieve this again. Much sleeping in tomorrow I think. And laundry.
Edit: and you can spot the slack of sleep from the slight stream on consciousness and other vaguearies. Definite sleep time.
