For info on someone else playing with iron smelting:
Darrell Markewitz the Wareham Forge - Preparing an Iron Smelt. So far we have been lucky enough to get high grade iron ore such that we haven't had to pre-roast. There is a lot more here as well - fairly certain we cited it in the Cockatrice article.
