Experts: Men Distort Religion to Justify 'Honour' Killings
via [livejournal.com profile] diepunyhumans

Setting aside the religious aspects mommentarily, why do women die to uphold/remove stain from male honour?
Easier targets that other males or acknowledging a personal problem/failure? Must stay in control... MINE... Is that part of it?

Then there are the questions of "What is honour?" and "How is female honour different to male honour?" ... and an archaic interest in a rather small piece of skin leading to female honour being much more focussed on the body historically.

Tangentially, you would think that a person is responsible for their own honour and standards, but there appear to be a group of systems (generally religious, but occasional biological arguements arise) whereby the males are not responsible for their actions and can be lured off track/corrupted by feminine wiles. Female body focus/obsession again? Yes, we know you are distractable, but to what extent is the distraction out of the control of the person distracted, and hence the responsibility of who or whatever is distracting?

How much are certain religions trying to control this or excuse this?

Do testicles automatically equate to poor impulse control?

How do you stop equating ovaries to property? Achievement vs what you were born with...

No this isn't meant as a rant against the male portion of the human race, but curiousity about what are the differences and why...and a curiousity/anger about how female honour is tied in with the body and property and marriage (historically). In connection especially to some of the Civil Union discussions, especially related to the sanctitiy of marriage and how it is "that most sacred of institutions, marriage, upon which the very foundations of human civilisation are and always have been built. "
from Garth George: Homosexual lobby poised to confront the last bastion (NZ Herald)

Now think about honour, property and control...

...and this has wandered a bit, hasn't it...

Will take reccommended reading on the subject... but should get back to stars at the momment...

I think it's to do with the semi-monogamous nature of humans. All these conceptions of honour seem to me to grow out of rules placed by men on woman to govern reproduction and ensure that any children are actually the child of the "father" (woman know who the mother is).

First you get the specific rules, then you get the "values", then the rules spread to cover all elements of reproductive conduct.

I'm always fascinated by the argument that homosexuals should not be able to marry because the union cannot produce children. Perhaps they want to ban infertile heterosexual couples from getting married too? That would go down well...
You'd hope that in today's "enlightened" society - marriage would be less about property and children (more property) and more about love...

Other curiosities

Following in the same vein - I have always wondered why it is that the slang terms for women's genitalia are considered to be so much more rude than equivalent terms for men's genitalia. Saying cock wouldn't get you a raised eyebrow yet cunt is apparently one of the most offensive words in the english language. Why is society still so obsessed with trying to control women's bodies?
