Canterbury Faire 2010
Feb. 9th, 2010 11:03 pmIt is that time of year for big camping event summaries.
For those wishing to skim to the piccies, they are on here from the given image onwards.
For anyone one who doesn't care, the rest is going behind the cut.
Fri 29 Jan: Work then much packing and loading of car. In bed only a little after midnight.
Sat 30 Jan: Up at ~5:30am for leaving the house round 6am for ferry check-in by 7am. Many Holdens... And the occasional Bentley. Nice sailing with many Scadians for company. Uneventful trip down, slowed down by various queues behind large vehicles, but since made it to site round 4pm when it theoretically opened, all fine. Set up. Big viking tent went up with 4 less poles but big pegs. All good. Thud in evening.
Sun 31 Jan: Slept in a bit, sign in, then off to Hamner Springs with K, D and B. Very good tapas and much soaking in nice hot water. 2nd time for soaking after setup, 1st time for Tapas, good precident for a tradition. Back and a bit more setup. Later night with some singing round the campfire.
Mon 1 Feb: Start of the event proper. Persian clothing class in the afternoon, then Medieval glass beads. Dinner and up late talking round campfire.
Tues 2 Feb: Started up warping up the loom. Winding around a volley ball pole and basket ball hoop pole down by the Darton encampment worked well. After lunch, much threading and tying of weights and knots. Even with help from A and
teffania, only about a 3rd done. A&S display in the evening - showed off the backworked coif, embroidered pouch and previous warp weighted loom product. Good discussions, marred somewhat by the bleeding nose in the middle. Contributed to missing the court down by the Mong where M got a Court Barony and Z got a Promethean Flame.
Weds 3 Feb: Tying knots continues. Z off to shoot Bambis in the mid afternoon. Continued tying knots. Not quite done by end of evening. Campfire in evening, and dropped by
realityadmin's vigil. Stargazing prior I think. Yay to satellites and a couple of shooting stars
Thurs 4 Feb:
sandhi's Tablet weaving tool class then Tying knots continued in morning, then decided wide enough. Started weaving. Z back but no bambi. Wombled in and out of court and saw/heard several people getting well deserved awards including
sandhi's Cockatrice,
teffania's Court Barony,
alpha_angel's Golden Nock and (eventually via ambush the following evening) T's Argent Pegasus. Help served feast in evening. Some scary singing. Far better singing down in the Ildhafn camp and at the Mong afterwards, with a focus on period pieces.
Fri 5 Feb: More weaving, mainly limited by upper arm strength as having to reach high. Unfortunately missed the lock class. Talks in afternoon on cubic equations and mathematical dueling (must read up on that) and medieval astrology. Warm so a little on the sleepy side through the latter. Evening was more singing, but bardic circle round campfire, so far more of a folk focus. Late night.
Sat 6 Feb: Weaving continued. Market in afternoon then a bit of a nap. Last weaving. Z playing with forge and silver working. Another late night.
Sun 7 Feb: Pack up :(. Offsite round 1pm (well behind anyone else on the same ferry sailing). Uneventful drive up and caught up with everyone at the Thai restaurant in Picton. 1st rain of the trip with light drizzle. Uneventful sailing. Home and thud.
Now back to the more pressing stuff like work and finding a house and moving. The next 4 weeks may be a bit frantic...
