Doing a grey army blanket Viking tunic for Z and he decided he wanted a Skjoldehamn style tunic (well, at least the standup collar bit). Sort of rush job for CF so not doing different striped fabric for the collar and the front patch. Also at this point skipping narrow woven bands on the cuffs, but will do the cording round the neck. Looks like a simple 3 strand plait or what? (colour images here, third picture down)*.

And in case anyone wants to have a go, the references also being used are:
A Tunic and Hood from Skjold Harbour for the best start.
And discussion here on [livejournal.com profile] pearl's LJ (this time last year) - for more, follow the skjoldehamn tag.
Marc Carlson's extant clothing page (will add link later)
As well as various printouts at home and stored on the computer which I can't exactly link to here.**

*No, I am not linking directly just to the picture when there is a nice discussion which someone has gone to the trouble of writing up. That's impolite...

** though may update at home if have time and can name sources.

Let me know if you don't have a copy of the Gjessing article (although it sounds like you have).

Most of the websites that used to have the photos from Gjessing (of the grumpy-looking man) seem to have vanished, but the last page of the Vikingatida Regnkläder paper by Mikael Hasteus [PDF] has the line drawings.

It looks like Løvlid submitted his thesis towards the end of last year, so maybe there will be an interesting thesis to read, soon?

On the portion close to the button, I can see a section with even width stripes of two colours. In a 3 strand plait, you get the 3 colours used in sequence - no way to get this to alternate. I believe the basic 5 strand plait is the same, but am unsure of the 4. I think it also has too much bulk for a 3 strand plait.

But on the portion around the collar, it does look like 2 strands one colour, one of the other, whih does suggest a 3 strand plait or equivalent fingerlooping. (a 3 loop fingerloop done to produce two unconnected strings is structurally the same as a plait.

I think quickest for you may be the best thing until someone publishes really close photos or an analysis.

Btw. From meory there are also fingerloop patterns that produce that pattern on top with a different pattern below.

But the shread of loop the button passed through - it seems to only have 3 strands of thread left detangling.
