Personally kd Lang... but that is the version I first heard.

It's a real toss between the original and kd Lang. But I've also heard Nick Cave's version and it's very good too.

I actually quite like the Jeff Buckley version, even though it's been the terribly popular one, and hideously over used.

I think he does something interesting with the lyrics, changes the mood and therefore the context for them.
