Interesting seeing a discussion from 2 quite different angles: paranormal romance especially vampire ones via Smath Bitches, Trashy Novels and Pharyngula.

Vampire novels I have enjoyed:
Sunshine by Robin McKinley
Those who hunt the night/Traveling with the dead by Barbara Hambly
Agyar by Steven Brust
Blood Ties etc by Tanya Huff
The Fledgling by Octavia Butler
Anno Dracula etc by Kim Newman (especially The Bloody Red Baron)
Nightwatch/Daywatch/Twilight Watch by Serge Lukyanenko
LKH's Anita Blake earlier novels
The Dragon in Waiting by John M Ford
PN Elrod's Lady Crymsyn wasn't bad.
There have been a couple of the Genre paranormal Romances which were okish, but not distinct enough for me to remember/chase down the authors...
Didn't get anywhere with Anne Rice.

Any patterns?* Suggestions?

* Apart from the fact that previously I would have had to have liked other books by that author before I would try the Vampire stuff. Less of a criteria now.

If you like light paranormal romance with a bit of comedy, you can try Charlaine Harris' series. They are titled 'Dead and (X)', or you can try Mary Janice Davidson's series which go by 'Undead and (X)'. They are all available at the Welly libraries. They take only a few hours to read and are neither serious nor meaningful in any way. I have a friend who runs a review site for paranormal romance. I"ll see if I can't find the URL for you.
