After a bit of a break
Nov. 13th, 2007 11:49 pmForgive me LJ for I have sinned... It has been 2 weeks since my last posting...
However I am sure there has been plenty to keep you entertained in the mean time, even if you had noticed the lack...
So, 2 weeks... I didn't explicitly writing things down, so dating may be variable.
Weds 31(?) Oct: Flew down to Chch, talked to people at Uni, caught up with
manus and crashed with Z's brother V. All warm and sunny down south.
Thurs 1 Nov: out to Z's parents farm. Much discussion and catching up with people, including Z's 9 month old nephew A, (who really liked the bear,
queneva :)
Fri 2 Nov: Gardening I think. And shooting things - I could hit the target quite reasonably with the scope:) Just used the .22 though. Z practiced a bit more to see how his damaged eye affected shooting things.
Sat 3 Nov: (Possibly the Fri stuff - see why writing stuff down at the time helps). Shopping at the nearby town, along with catching up with Z's Uncle R and showing off rural machine photos from Aussie.
Sun 4 Nov: Fencing? (Leastwise attaching droppers to fences - I got better with practice).
Mon 5 Nov: Back into nearby town to pick up the groceries we accidentally left behind, check internet (expensive library rate), pick up weedkillers of various intensities and the associated free ham, and catch up with family friends of Z who also enjoyed looking at photos of random (rusty) Australian machinery collections. Drizzle in the day, with home fireworks in the evening. The 3 big ones that Z's brother H had were very impressive, especially the one which the BOOOOOM echoed off the mountain(s) for the next half minute...
Tues 6 Nov: Fences? Z shooting at things...
Weds 7 Nov: Ditto I suspect.
Thurs 8 Nov: Ditto? Brief email check in afternoon?
Fri 9 Nov: Ditto with a BBQ thrown in in the evening with H&J&A and Z's mum - yay to BBQ bambi...
Sat 10 Nov: Eventually into Chch via
manus's place. Very nice Tandoori Palace dinner (yay banquet and the oh so good garlic naan and onion whatsits) with good company and conversation and garden wandering after. No reminiscing over old hall of residence days and stump looting occurred. More talking then eventually made it to the party at
cataragon's place :). Caught up with lots of people, who would take too long to list here. Much childrens party food - yay cherrios and burger rings and lolly cake. Some more fireworks. After a bit of trundling, in exchange for transport (not too bumpy I hope), crashed at
slothphil, B&M's place.
Sun 11 Nov. Much sleeping in before heading back to Z's parents place via the Plains Rail Museum (yay to open days and riding on a steam train*) and visiting Z's Uncle R (who had also been at the Museum with H&J&A, but had left earlier than us)
Mon 12 Nov: I think I sewed trousers and Z shot at things. Talking to local geologists (and found out about local comet hunting efforts). Packing.
Tues 13 Nov: Back to Chch, catching up with people at Uni, returning car and getting dropped off at the airport just as the nice fine sunny day turned to custard and the southerly with rain arrived. Uneventful flight back up with the rainy city. Very happy that Dad picked us up and we didn't have to catch buses and wait in the rain.
In general, much time was spent fencing, Z shooting to practice/get his accuracy back up to safe deer killing/hunting levels, and visiting Z's nephew A. A has a definite delight in things with wheels and grins broadly and bounces when pushing a trolley or placed in front of a steering wheel. There was much distracting of him (generally by Z) to allow his parents to get on with house building and garden construction.
Should have spent all of this evening packing for MLH camp starting tomorrow, but there has been much internet catchup-age (politely alternating) and eating of chocolate coated strawberries (yay Dad again). Besides, with southerly blast and gale warnings for tomorrow morning, a leasurely womble out to site in the afternoon seems sensible.
Sleep time now though. And then another couple day technology break. Need to finish some trousers...
*Plains Museum, Tinwald. Think it would be a really fun day/afternoon to get a group of people in Victorian clothing (1870s or later based on the earliest train age they had there) along to one of their open days. They have some quite cool engines, buildings and a very nice (18th C onwards) woodworking museum (Z was happy:). Entry by donation with $6 extra for a steam train ride.
