Time to do the usual "summarize long weekend medieval camping event while as sleep deprived as possible" (or waiting for your hair to dry, or both).

So, NAAMA 2007.

Weds: Found some of the stuff we needed and borrowed other stuff (thank you K). This applies to Thurs as well (Thank you A&R).
Thurs: Made a(nother) double swag (4th swag for the year). Z got poles and pegs etc.

Fri: Muttered at sewing machines, broke too many sewing machine needles, didn't make a tent. But that was ok. Packed car, visited supermarket and petrol station and finally made it out of town around 4pm - a little later than planned. An uneventful trip out to site - always a good thing. Nice to see familiar faces at the gate and further on. Tent went up and we discovered that a double swag fits very nicely into the back half of the geteld with plenty of space for chests at either end - not certain why I had remembered it as smaller, but I was pleasantly suprised. Introduced to various MLHNZ people. Very nice setup from all involved - fire pit with plenty of cooking gear, wooden tables and benches (have photos, may post them later). Wandering around and looking at things and meeting and greeting. Forget how late an evening it was (only midnightish I think). Clear and nice out weather-wise.

Sat: Clouded over and threatened rain before finally delivering. Awnings were prepared - the piece of incomplete tent came in handy, leading to a covered area with table seating for ~12. Oilskin cloaks and hoods came in handy. Caught the tail end of the market but didn't sell any oilskin cloaks or oilskin. Did sell all the leather Z had brought (5 half hides), on the way to to the market. Wombled back to camp after a while, hauling unsold stuff. Later, when the rain got heavier, did a tour round the site, trying to sell the cloaks and failed again. Did get an order for 5m of the oilskin though. The rain was evil and turned heavier in time for Z heading for archery, but stopped later for archery accuracy chicken training games before(or after?) dinner, which Z had fun at along with K and various enthusiastic others. This only stopped due to low light (so I think after dinner). Then there was good food and good company and much lurking around the campfire.
Then the glowsticks came out.
Combat blunts glowsticks, same game as earlier but in the dark... Shooting stars:)... Pronounced silly, but much fun was had by all.
Lateish night I suspect.

Sun: Dawned clear and sunny and stayed like that. Forge assembly (?) by Z (though that may have been late Sat afternoon). Market and still no sales of the made-up cloaks . Did however sell the black linen sideless surcoat (started life as LOTR costume and I don't have the right headgear for it) and spare wool Viking pixie hat coif. And got an order for a cloak and hood (and cloakpin) set. I took some photos of the fort battle and then napped in the afternoon, while Z played with the forge (and killed another pair of trousers). Evening was a very nice dinner (spitroasted meats and casseroles and fried cheese and asparagas with blue cheese*). We worked out if we had had one particular extra person there, we would have had representatives of all of the Wellington medieval groups present. A flurry of activity trying to make fire arrows, then off to watch the fort burn down. A while to ignite (accelerants alone are not your friend), but in the end she caught and blazed nicely. Nicely enough that the fire brigade turned up (they had apparently been warned ahead). Definite note that young drunk males should be kept away, especially when they decide to give fire walking a try - most were successful, but one did trip over and badly burn hands (as we found out later when we got back to our tents and found him at the tap behind). And remember, swimming pools work better than a single tap for serious burns. [livejournal.com profile] alpha_angel and [livejournal.com profile] basal_surge got to have fun there til the ambulance arrived. And thus one of the fire trucks came back to put the full thing out - poor local volunteer fire brigade. Then there was more sitting around a much smaller fire talking til ~2am... By this time it had clouded over and there were apparently 100km/h winds just south, but we were nicely sheltered. Did rain a couple times in the rest of the night though.

Mon (Labour Day): Long leisurely breakfast of everything not eaten over the previous days (mmmm fried bacon and apple). This also gave time for things (especially tents) to dry out under the clear sunny skies. Pack pack pack down with pauses for sunscreen and rehydration and conversation along the way. Eventually done by about 2pm (we pack slow and get easily distracted - just about everyone else was off far earlier) and on our way, with a slight detour via Prenzels (mmm chocolate liqueur) on the way back. Nice uneventful drive back, the usual unpacking and sorting and arguements over who gets to check internet first etc. Z is currently asleep and has been for several hours and I shall go and do so shortly.

*Z had the asparagas, I had the blue cheese and it worked out perfectly.

That was fun. Not long til we get to do more of that at November Camp, though there are (of course) a bunch of things that need doing before then... :)
