Or at least a slight overlap in cultures...
Lost Worlds (7:30pm Sun on SBS) is currently showing a 3 part doco on the Roman Empire. Tonight was the 1st episode, focusing on Vindolanda (sp?). They showed archaeologists in mud, finding stuff. Leather sandels! And fragments (quite large) of leather tents!!!. Light weight leather though. Wonder if they have any good seams... Yay for bogs and peat. May be worth checking their website to see if they have any photos of the finds online. They also showed lots of (most likely) high quality re-enactors having fun, though I didn't catch from the credits which group (maybe Ermine Street Guard?). And nice ruins.

Other news: finished the last blackwork chess square round Thurs. Also finished the blackworked border that was going to be a sunglass case. May make into a hankie instead though it may be a bit small. Currently washing the fabric to get rid of the strange yellow stains that were visible in the photos.

Random notes: Cranberry, Raspberry and Strawberry tea goes really well with half a sachet of instant ginger tea. The rest of the packet works even better in hot chocolate.

Think that about covers things.

Vindolanda turned up huge amounts of very well-preserved stuff. From memory, a wooden fortress was rebuilt in stone at some point, after the wood-built area was covered with clay. The clay did wonders for preservation.

My favorite was the Samian ware, which looked like it had been salvaged from the broken merchandise skip behind some trendy modern crockery store. Lots of leather footwear. The commander's social calendar.

If you're moving back here and ever get seriously keen on Roman gear, I'd be keen to talk.

Well, we've got all this info on migration era/roman era germanic iron age stuff, see...

I've always been tempted by iron age from Hallstat culture through to early migration era because they were still throwing people in bogs with clothes on, so there are a lot more reliable clothing bits than there are for viking age.
