Grump for the day
Dec. 2nd, 2008 06:42 pmSo, noticed the SA learner driver licence is about to expire and decided that it would be good to see if it can just be changed over, rather than having to do a theory test again/start from scratch.
Phoned up and confirmed that it could be done and that I had all the ID needed (proof of address, passport for ID and SA drivers licence) to do it at lunch time. Wandered down to the local AA. Filled out the 2 pages of forms. Left blank the bit for issue date of the SA licence, since that wasn't given on the card. Joined the queue. Waited for about 10 min.
Presented the stuff at desk. All fine fine fine until it was established that there was no issue date on the SA licence. Found out that apparently I needed to get official certification of that date and NZTA cannot issue licences without it. That was the only thing stopping me getting the licence.
So, headed back to office somewhat grumpy (never deal with paperwork and people before eating lunch at lunch time) and had to poke on web for contact details for SA licence people. Typed in a request for information in an email form (very generic enquiry form since NO more direct contact info). Not encouraged by message given when send that "project information will be sent out when ready in 2006".
But I did get a reply. If I send $21 AU with a letter I can get official confirmation of the date of issue. And then I can bring things back in and get the licence transferred.
Sigh - suspect it may be easier (cost wise/hassle wise) to just start from scratch on NZ learner system, but I tend to muck up in the online quiz enough that I need to do a bit more work before going for the theory test*. And never quite get around to it.
I could be pissed off at NZTA for being pedantic *****, except given the time dependent from-date-of-issue conditions for the learner licence in NZ, I can understand why they kind of do need that information officially. Even if I really don't care if the amount of time I have been on a learner licence in AU counts towards how long I need to be on a learner licence on the NZ system before going for a restricted licence - I don't have enough driving experience to do so within the next 6 months anyway. I reserve the right to be annoyed at the SA licence organization for being dumb enough not to include that info on the licence (and for having a website crap enough that I can't tell if I was at the right organization's website, let alone anything else.
So, $44 NZ + writing away and $21 AU to get the licence transferred over, or pay $79 and have to pass a test?
Choices choices...
* Note: ACT multi choice theory test was far easier than the NZ equivalent. Go for logic and the lowest out of any numerical values and you are pretty much guaranteed to pass once you remember the odd give way rules. Options will be 3 stupid and 1 sensible in 95% of cases. NZ one makes you think more. Numerical answers may actually be the middle of the range. Common sense isn't enough.
And a grumpy note to the LJ spell checker: licence is the noun, license is the verb. Dealing with this a lot at work, so fairly certain of that one.
