New Years and all that.
Jan. 3rd, 2007 04:12 pmDrivy drivy drivy drivy...
Fri 29 Dec: Ended up leaving around 2pm. Not exactly in a rush - everyone had good books. Crashed in Balranald around 9pm.
Sat 30 Dec: Balranald to Canberra, with a brief pause in Wagga Wagga for lunch and books - only came away with 3 books: The Planets by Dava Sobel, A Feast for Crows and a very nice book on Meteorites. Hit Canberra at the same time as a nice thunderstorm wandered through - hail down Northbourne, then to R&Ps. Blobbed for a while before heading to the Civic Turkish Pide house. You forget how nice their bread, dips and zuchini balls are. Very full.
Sun 31 Dec: Fishwyk food markets not open, but Jamison Trash and Treasure was and Z scored a(nother) tool box and tools. Belconnon Markets was half open including the good half of the bookshop and soap store. Picked up Cobweb (Neal Stephenson coauthor) and Sex in Georgian England*, oatmeal soap and bubblebath. Then onwards to R&M where R joined us in the deepest darkest depths of the new Canberra Center for LBD shopping. No good LBDs were to be found - ridiculous underbust hideously coloured Paris Hilton wannabe crap is currently in but R got the B&W spotted dress she wanted for attending a wedding and I found some silly corset like tops. Z only bought 1 more Napoleonic navel fic novel while R and I were getting lunch. Escaped around 4pm when everything shut, then headed off to R&M for dinner - to be joined by R&P (and his curry) and T. There we nibbled on the plethora of dried beasties and other food and had dinner and talked and drank and watched the very impressive thunderstorm miss us. There was an hour long detour to a SCAdian pyjama party where Z and I and R caught up with people for a while before wombling back. Then went to other R's nice shiney tall work and had a grand unimpeded view of the midnight fireworks. Then back, a bit more talking and drinking and general crashing on sofas around 1am.
Mon 1 Jan 2007: Slow gentle start with poached eggs on smoked salmon/trout for breakfast with the leftover food. Eventual wombling to J's (once it was established he was awake and cohearent) to inventory the Festival stuff we were storing and shift the bulk to EFTB's so he could have a bit more space to work/mess. 2 chests, a box bellows filled with stuff, and a very large pole collection later, all was shifted with various people's help. And for some odd reason after nice cool temperatures for all the rest of the time, the sun came out for half an hour and I managed to burn my shoulder and neck** - hmph. Then a very late lunch at Beconnon Mall, a decision not to see Casino Royale, back to R&P for dinner and late talking under the stars.
Tues 2 Jan: reasonably early start. Found out ANU library external membership doesn't allow you access to the online journal - bugger says Z. Talked to people at RSES before wombling out of town around 11am. Stopped at Wagga Wagga for lunch (learned from last time and went direct to the supermarket) and to pick up ( (Mum, if you read this, don't follow the link) ). Then drove on. Light showers over the Hay plain and we missed the main downpours - Z was in a driving zone, so we didn't stop at Balranald, but continued on. Nice first rainbow for the New Year. Also nice to know there is a 24 hour service station in Ouyen. And we drove on. They don't fruit fly inspect around 11pm at the Vic/SA border. And we drove on. And on. And on, and at 2am, we pulled into our driveway, got some stuff out of the car, turned on the airconditioning - much nicer out than in, and fell asleep.
Weds 3 Jan: Sleep and more sleep and some reading and catching up on email etc. Back to being warm out. Time to go shopping.
* Any book where the author writes of another author in the field:
is off to an entertaining start.
** The reason I am probably spending as much of the next few days topless as possible. Which I am sure you all needed to know...

As a scholar he was an outstanding spicimen of a type that seems to florish in today's universities more than at any earlier period, enthralling large audiences by the effrontery with which he missread half the available documentary sources and the nonchalance with which he ignored the rest.
