Things to be tried:
Experimental archaology weekend - full medieval kit, tents, cooking etc. Possibly involving a charcoal burn... Mud, dirt, shifting rocks, fires...
Contest (possibly for Festival or any medieval camping event) for best recycled campsite. We decided to allow buying second hand as trying to do the entire thing from free materials might require being a little too light fingered. All (or as much as possible) to be scrounged from skips (and the side of the road/track), picked up at the Sallies, YMCA, Revolve, garage sales, trash and treasure markets etc. Bonus points for factory seconds, closing down sales, and more than half off the original price. Triple word score if looted onsite and no longer recognisable in its orginal form. And the trick - carry it off so it looks used but authentic or at least plausible (with references/explanation). Possibly easier for earlier periods but ...
