Made it to the optometrist. Bit of a shock there. Discovered that I couldn't read the eyechart below about the 3rd or 4th row. Definitely not as good as I remembered. Poke poke prod flashlight later and some lenses are put in front of my eyes. Now I can read all the lines down to the bottom. Very definite improvement. Hmmmm. Turns out the better eye is just on the side of being legal to drive without glasses but the worse eye is just on the other side. Average is just legal without, but only just.

So, I have a box of 4 frames I have been trying out this evening (narrowed down from a larger bunch in the shop), which various people got to comment on at Council meeting. Looks like the lightest weight ones with no frame on the bottom suit best (and coincidentally are the cheapest). Quite modern looking, but reasonably unobtrusive. Will take things back and place orders tomorrow.

What I want to know is how I managed not to notice things were so out of focus in the background for so long... Definite shock to work out how much things have changed in only the past few years.

Baseline note for reference - passed eye test for drivers license fine in ~2004? Mind you, that was 3 years ago.

Your brain tries to compensate for as long as it can, basically. The reason that what is usually a fairly slow deterioration often seems sudden is that your brain hits the point where it can no longer fill in the blanks (sometimes literally - last time GEotU needed his glasses updated, bits of his vision literally started disappearing. His speech centers were also affected, interestingly).

Glad you found something you like, anyways. I've done glasses and contacts and, while contacts can be damn handy sometimes (GEotU would love some for fighting), generally I prefer glasses. Do take a look at some frames with attachable sunglasses though (or look at getting a tinted set of prescription glasses) because not being able to wear sunglasses in NZ's bright light is a real pain.

Oh yeah, and just get your DL adjusted to "Must wear glasses". Then you don't have to do the silly test. I'm technically legal to drive without glasses and that scares the hell out of me - I _know_ the uncertainty created by my short-sightedness could cause an accident.

I should get my eyes checked again. It's been a couple of years since I had it done by an optometrist.

Frameless glasses - have a good hard look at whether they'll put a strain on the attachment points. Kat's had the lens snap around the screwholes, mine had the metal break just next to it three times now due to metal fatigue.
