Continuing the hand sewing questions

An important one I forgot:
What techniques do you recommend to prevent short term injury (eg stabbing oneself*) or longer term injury (eg ways of supporting fabric to prevent strain on you etc)?
Some of these have semi been already mentioned in the general advice stuff such as learning to use a thimble and making sure of good lighting, take breaks and stretch, but I suspect there are others.
*Thimble works well for middle right finger tip (pretty well calloused though) if I remember and pad with fabric to make it stick on, but I tend to most often damage the front of the left thumb. Lots of little puncture holes from the needle going a little too far...
