(no subject)
Apr. 1st, 2005 09:50 amSigh, fog all gone now. Was fun dancing around the borders.
Started chasing down two references:
Geijer, Agnes. 1983. "The Textile Finds from Birka." Cloth and Clothing in Medieval Europe, ed. N.B. Harte and K.G. Ponting, pp. 80-99. London: Heinemann.
Hägg, Inga. 1983. "Viking Women's Dress at Birka: A Reconstruction by Archaeological Methods." Cloth and Clothing in Medieval Europe, ed. N.B. Harte and K.G. Ponting, pp. 316-350. London: Heinemann.
Both very good articles on Viking finds from Birka, especially with respect to fabric reminants preserved by their close proximity to metal fragment eg broaches (as mentioned and misspelled in the previous posting). These appear to be the main English publishings of their work and are very often cited works on the subject.
ANU library doesn't have it. (It was thought they might...)
National Library of Australia doesn't have it. (though they do appear to have a great deal of other stuff on medieval textiles and discussion)
University of Canterbury library does... Slight slap to self for not having found this/checked this before, though admittedly do have more time now.
So, could someone who is a Canterbury Uni student/staff or has access to the library (Royal Society membership is a great way to go and you get to hear about some great talks as well) get out, photocopy (suspect breaks less copyright) or scan said articles and pass copies on to me?
Preferable someone who would be wanting to get a copy for themselves/read it anyway. Email me or post a comment if you can. I'll be cross posting this to UCMRS and BC so others interested in Viking stuff can check out the references.
Make sure things get back to the library safely too so everyone can play:)

Cloth and clothing in medieval Europe : essays in memory of Professor E.M. Carus-Wilson / edited by N.B. Harte and K.G. Ponting.
Central Library, Shelved on level 11 HD 9865 .A2 .C646 In Library
(as of ~noon today)
Think that covers things for now.
Should stop picking up new ideas for projects...
Bone/antler needle case
wax tablets
Pilgrim scrip
Early norman/late anglo-saxon long sleeved gown. (evidence in Bayeux Tapestry, discussion in Dress in Anglo-Saxon England, appendix by Robin Netherington (?Sp), more of a maybe project/possible excuse for embroidery)
Time for milo and photometry.
