Academic fads...
May. 5th, 2006 11:08 amMorning tea discussion involved the large number of recent students wanting to study planets. Previous trends had been for cosmology (90s), then before that, galaxies (80s?), and long in the distant past, stellar evolution.
It was also noted that currently there aren't enough discovered planets for the number of students studying them worldwide. If you start including the academics, there is probably about 1/3 to a 1/4 of a planet each... Although, these odds are expected to improve in future. It also depends on how you define your planet - Trans Neptunian objects and the stuff out in the Kuiper Belt and Oort Clouds gives you plenty for everyone.
Mind you, in getting use out of your information, there is probably at least a paper and a half written per neutrino detected from Supernova 1987A. (9? neutrinos total)
It was also noted that the deposit for dome/building keys hadn't changed for a while and A) wonder where that money went to (though it is refunded when you hand the key back), and B) how they would refund certain older academics since pounds are no longer legal tender...
Converge new model of NGC 1866 #4 (new improved recipe with extended layers - guaranteed 100% fat free) or plot up log(gf) and excitation potentials for lines. Oh the tough decisions...
