Finally back from Festival (~7:30pm today) after only 2 car loads: thank you to the people who took stuff...

This entry will be added to when I remember: putting in summary phrases now while I still remember vaguely clearly...

Slightly sleep deprived so this may not be my most cohearant writing... at least the round one component...

Thurs
Morning tent sewing (yes, I know... sigh). Waiting for a lack of power cut. Defrosting the freezer. Packing. Eventually out on site by about 3pm. Frantic door tie sewing as people arrived. Food. Tavernage. Not too late a night.

Fri
Morning: something... brain blank. Will dig out timetable later. Afternoon - some mild stomach bug which had me alternating between the bed and the toilets. Hmph. Better in evening. Rain!!!. Frantic tent organisation as waterproofing on walls and ground sheets not great. Just as well we had most of out stuff well away from the walls. Just seepage thought ground bits at sides. Following retensioning of ropes and repacking under the bed, fine. None of the other tents leaked, bar where people were silly enough to leave stuff against the fabric. Yay for wool to keep you warm and dry. Fire was good.
[Edit: Mon morning was spent wombling around camp, checking the viking pouch class to establish that yes, I did already have a pouch like that, then passing on Bal d'Argent fliers and dancing for a while. Then back to camp for lunch.]

Sat
Slight stress for start of market - nag nag nag. Lots of stuff. Astronomers had fun. Loot haul included: Festival T-shirts, Cockatrice issue specializing in Viking stuff, linen thread, brass needle made by Maggie, good string of Viking beads, 3 pairs of little Viking scissors, 1 bone needle, some books*.
Z sold wool, cloaks, cloakpins and leather. Leather sales were a little slow but the wool went completely. Afternoon - talks on ??? (will check timetable later)[Edit: Viking seams - some very nice clothing, Wombling around the Laurel Prize tourney - interesting one on Lighting whom Z was happy to bounce at over rushlights - fundimental rush light definition differences - oil/fat/wax impregnated pith vs coating. A viking hat made from some gorgeous handwoven shadow weaving - very very nice. Then Emrys's talk on Viking archery - very interesting and really want to see what else he has worked on wrt that era. ~3pm onwards was] Z making cloak pins. Evening: talking, trivia evening - wish I had caught more, Whiskey Tour of Scotland - will I be considered a heratic and burnt at the stake if I consider the fun of the conversation, company, reactions and general all round vivacity to be the best bit. Migration from campfire to campfire, with singing into the night. 3:30 am pumpkining. Somewhat cold. The ice on the bridge was pretty...
* Museum of London: Dress accessories, Textiles and clothing, and Medieval Household. And a book on Anglo-Scandinavian bone, antler and ivory. Credit card will need feeding... NB Yes I have been eyeing up the Museum of London ones for a while. And I didn't buy anything else all Festival... other than a CD of data on Finnish grave finds for 50 cents. And Z did make more than I spent...

Sun
[Edit: Slept in cause so cold. Unfortunately through the 1st Kass McGann talk]. Z and [livejournal.com profile] alpha_angel fought (in war scenarios) in morning. Afternoon: A&S classes ??[Edit: Authenticity 101 by Kass McGann - nothing really new but quite entertaining - moved to 3pm ie after the next class due to bloody court. Then 1 source, 2 flavours (Asfrithr) focussing on the different derivations arrived at for 10th-12th C Finnish overdresses from the same pinned fabric fragment - very interesting - this was the CD I bought - yay to archaology and extant fragments rather than paintings]. Z made bellows (with help). K continued shooting people. Evening: some wine bar singing but mainly more talking around St Floz campfire.

Mon
Lotsa A&S classes: Eura dress/grave (Asfrithr again), mathematical tent construction and costing (Stephano), (lunch), 14th C Scandanavian clothing (Maggie)- yay to more grave finds with intact linen, 12 C clothing, historial reproductions (Kass McGann). Back to camp around 4pm - the smelting had begun ~1pm, with the ore added about 2:30pm. Iron extracted ~8:45pm (plus or minus 15 min). Large audience, very impressive (and occasionally slightly painful) flying hot slag, large lumps, genuine Iron - there should be lots of pictures at some point. Couldn't have been done without the Abbotsford Bellows team, with the essential ingredients of charcoal, iron ore, cider and hot air:) Bouncy Z showing off the results. People generally rewarded him with alcohol. Quite drunk and eventually tired Z with his rock pillow. Apparently it was a very comfortable rock. Slight herding to bed...

Tues
Early start. Packdown whoosh... poof and all of St Floz camp was gone by noon, bar us and very occasional stragglers. Everybody gone:( Strong winds durring packup didn't help and the excitement of the ridgebeam on the Viking A-frame snapping and needing to be taken down FAST was not appreciated. Given we think we heard the initial crack noise back on Sun set up, we were fucking lucky there weren't any strong winds until today. Round one trip, unload, drive back, new load, home via Yass KFD who seemed to have forgotten to add the secret herbs, spices and flavouring. Served us right for getting it, but sheer starvation....

That was fun:)
Very happy I don't need to work tommorrow... Sleep now.

It was a fun thing indeed. Eek on tent snappage and dead right it's a good thing we didn't have high winds earlier. Not what you would have wanted in the middle of the night while you were sleeping.
