The trip to KWW (the expanded version)
Since I am dozing off at my desk and need to stay awake somehow...
Tues 23 Aug: Morning bus direct Canberra to Sydney International airport. Nice and direct and you save $24 from the train from Central to the Airport. Which given it only costs $27 each to get from Canberra to Sydney... Unexciting flight with pretty Chch lights while landing:). Picked up by
manus (thank you) and after dropping off stuff, dropped by a games evening at Heather et als. Good to see people, even if more talking would have been good.
Weds 24 Aug: Dropped off in town, grabbed rental vehicle (curious to note that the "Rent a Dent" vehicle was 20 years younger than our current car) and headed off to catch up with people at Uni. Yay to publishing more papers - the writing of them is not so much fun, but kind of necessary. Filled in time at UBS and then for a change, was the one late for meeting outside the library:). South City and sushi with fresh fish. Kutwells - no linen but some $6/m wool. Kiwi disposals - unfortunately less good each time. Global fabrics - eyed up wool but greater that $10/m not quite worth it. Fabric vision for black buttons - we kinda lost the ones we picked up from there on the last trip over. Oops. The great Hell Pizza hunt. Not at Barringtons Mall. Dropped in on
slothphil, who was being visited by
argentbear. Talked for a while and after careful instruction, found Hell. Mmmmmmm - lemon pepper wedges with garlic mayo sauce.
Thurs 25 Aug: Found the fabric shop on Bedford Row. They may take a while to restock their wool collection, but at $4/m... Besides, we had space left from the leather. Running slightly late to the airport, but since everyone's plane was later, turned out ok. Almost didn't recognize
alpha_angel - oops. She ditched bags with us and ran, while we had hot drinks with Mum, Dad, and other geological associates. Told about civil union, photos, waved them through to customs - off to Durham and Norway for 3 weeks. Met up with with
alpha_angel and
manus at Mainstreet Cafe. Broke the news to them that we wanted them for more than lunch... Yay to the witnesses:) Headed off to the Registry early, filled in some paperwork, but Registrar was at lunch til 2pm, so wombled off to the Arts Centre and back.
The ceremony was not exactly prolonged - it took about 2 min, excluding the paper signing. For the fashion concious, the couple were clad in black leather jackets and combat boots and scarfs were much in evidence. Apparently this was the first civil union the (duty) Registrar had gotten to do, although one of the ladies at the office had done the 1st in NZ - low publicity though. Yay to
alpha_angel getting the video bit of the camera working, even if it was only half way through.
Dropped Manus off, dropped by Church Corner for munchies and fish and chips (amazing how cheap even the expensive fish and chip place is in NZ - two fish (one of them named) and a scoop for $7), and headed out to WW via the Rakaia Gorge. Arrived, settled in, started playing chinese whispers, talked, spa'd. I crashed before Z.
Fri 26 Aug: Early morning fire alarm. Hmph. Breakfast, dropped by Z's parents, back for lunch, sunlight nap, Z continued nap inside while I played with camera, movie, dinner, LOTR musical:), more spa while watching rain, then hail, then sleet, then snow drift down.
Sat 27 Aug: Early morning because on Breakfast. Nap after. Hair hennaing - conehead and amazing mess in showers. Staveley School museum and sightseeing. Told Z's parents about the civil union, back for dinner then off for Z's mum's birthday cake. Back for games - Lunch money is evil:). Mmmm cheese and salmon and talking. Another late night.
Sun 28 Aug: Slightly later morning fire alarm. Breakfast, packing, brunch, snowfight:), photos, departure. Wandered up to the lime kilm, then back to Z's parents - talking and photos. Back to Chch for (urgent) food, airport drop off of
alpha_angel, car drop off, talking and collapse.
Mon 29 Aug: 4:30am wakeup for 5am taxi and 7am flight. Silly me forgot to transfer sewing kit to checked on luggage so surrendered little viking scissors (cost less originally than the postage price) - will have to pick up another pair or two at Festival. Slept on flight to Brisbane, quick smooth customs, food, flight to Sydney (more sleep there), nasty expensive train to Central, food, patch of sunlight and books, bus (more sleep), bus home, shopping, dinner, more sleep.
I think that covers everything... appart from the fact that I may possibly still need more sleep and came down with a cold for the first time this year. Bloody coordination of illness and holidays.
