Costuming Meme

1. What is your favorite fabric?
wool (at the moment)

2. Best pattern you have ever used?
Closest I have come is website set of instructions...

3. If you had to choose to make a dress from either the 16th century or 18th century which would you choose and why?
16th century.

4. Last costume book you purchased?
Woven into the Earth & Dress in Anglo-Saxon England. Still on way from Amazon though...

5. Do you prefer hand sewing or machine sewing?
Hand sewing as it involves far less swearing and stress than sewing machines and can be done on buses.

6. What type of sewing machine do you own?
OLD singer just purchased on Sun. Trying it out tonight. It is going to have to cope with 4 layers of canvas... Fingers crossed.

7. If you were given a choice to visit a museum to study costumes, what country and museum would you choose?
Victoria & Albert. Or if there are any with Viking/Scandanavian textile remnants.

6. Favorite costume designer---before 1945?
Don't have one.

7. Do you prefer to work with silk or velvet?
Velvet was a bit of a bastard and will find out about silk in the next few weeks.

8. Cotton or Wool?
Wool.

9. If given the opportunity to be taught the craft of costuming by a costume designer from any era, who would it be?
12th C bliaut manufacturer just to find out how they actually did it, but otherwise, too wide a time range.

10. Silk thread or Linen thread?
Silk I guess as it is sodding impossible to get linen thread here unwaxed.

11. Given the choice would you choose to learn the art of dyeing fabric (natural or chemical) or the art of draping?
Uncertain. Got nice blue from dying linen this weekend, but that was modern inorganic chemical (\begin{rant} Chemical are involved in both "natural" and "chemical" dyes, it is just the degree of processing involved. \end{rant})

12. What is your dream dress?
Cotehardie based on Hrolfnes(?sp) style findings...at the moment.

13. Arnold or Hunnisett?
Arnold. No idea who the other person is.

14. What costume drama would you prefer to have worked on?
No idea.

15. Favorite Queen?
Eleanor of Aquitaine

16. If you could own only one costuming book, which would it be?
Don't actually own any at present - just have some on order. Patterns of Fashion is cool but a bit late - Will see how Woven into the Earth and Dress in Anglo-Saxon England turn out.

17. If you could only choose one embellishment for your gown, what would you choose?
Embroidery - hands down. Style depends on garment.

18. Feathers or fur?
Fur. You really want a feathered Viking?

19. Green or Red?
Oh... tough choice. Both:)

20. Assuming you own more than one vintage garment. Which piece would you donate to a costume museum?
The rarer one...?

21. What is the most comfortable - corset/stays/set or bodies you have worn?
Gallery Serpentine Victorian cause the Elizabthan one I made digs in too much in the front (1st and so far only attempt, so what can you expect)

22. Embroidery or Tatting?
Embroidery

23. Lord of the Rings or Star Wars?
Lord of the Rings

24. Favorite Costume Drama Actress?
Cate Blanchett or Helena Bonham Carter.

25. What was the last Costume you made and why?
? Full costume. Just finished undertunic for Z. Prior to that, green apron dress for me to go with broaches Z made me:)

26. Last costume drama DVD you purchased?
Got given the Moulon Rouge DVD. (Have seen LOTR listed as an answer for this one. It is NOT a costume drama, though am planning to go and drool over the costumes and stuff at the touring Exhibit in Sydney shortly)

27. What type of music do you listen to while sewing?
Celtic, classical, whatever. Generally prefer familiar TV or DVDs, so remember to look up more often and stop buggering my neck.

28. What inspires you to create a ensemble?
No idea.

29. Would you prefer to be a costume designer or a costume technician?
Technician - no design ability, but would like to build skills to make stuff well.



Weekend of sewing and running around. Commercial laundry was having fun with 7+m lengths of the canvas, so glad that was farmed out. Less ironing that way but still costs... Got some great wools (red, maroon and grey, 8m+ for $36) from the YMCA monster garage sale. No workbench, but Z found surrogate table. He now has a functioning workshop. Happy Zane:). Last freeish weekend for a while and the entire time was spent rushing around. Scary. May need some sleep soon. Too much late night SBS and Rage.
